A BLUE-GROUND SUMMER GAUZE 'DRAGON' COURT ROBE, JIFU
CHINA, 19TH-20TH CENTURY
The robe is worked in gold threads, decorated with a frontal four-clawed dragon couched around a flaming pearl and two others in profile beneath it emerging from golden waves and rocks, the back repeats the same motif. The sleeves are also each decorated with a frontal four-clawed dragon. The dragons are amongst various auspicious objects and motifs, such as the rare jumping carps and lions holding coins, bats, double gourds and cloud scrolls.
