A BRONZE FIGURE OF XIWANGMU AND A MANDORLA
THE FIGURE: CHINA, MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)
The Daoist Queen Mother of the West is shown seated and holds a hu tablet in both hands in front of her chest. The figure has a benevolent expression and is dressed in heavy robes and wears a phoenix-form headdress. The associated gilt-lacquered bronze mandorla, Ming dynasty (1368-1644) or later, is in the form of flaming aureole with the Eight Buddhist Emblems and three small Buddhas seated on lotus thrones.
