Lot Essay

The top and base of this square-form seal are inscribed in Manchu and Chinese with the characters Zhangjiakou tai zhan you lu jun tai di san tai can ling tuji, li bu zao that may be translated as "Seal of The Participating Leader of the Third Station of the Army of the Right-hand Route at Zhangjiakou Station". One side is incised with the characters Qian zi yiqian sanbai sanshiliu hao (number 133 of the series) and to the other side with Qianlong shi er nian [1747] liu yue (made in the 6th month of the 12th year of Qianlong).
At the time the seal was made, Zhangjiakou was a important military post north-west of Beijing, in present day Hebei province. It was a stronghold of military signficiance during the expansion of the Qing dynasty empire during this period.
