The yoke back chair is a classic Chinese form and it can be found in hardwoods such as huanghuali and zitan as well as in yumu, also known as northern elmwood, such as the present lot.

We have sought to record changes in the condition of these pieces acquired after their initial manufacture. - There is rubbing to the lacquered surface, especially to the front upper surface of the chairs and to the urpper surfaces of the arms as exepected with age and use. - The mat surfaces of the seats have been worn in places as visible on the images. - There are small nicks and shallow chips, predominantly running along the various edges of the chairs, the largest loss to the upper surface of one side of one chair by the middle strut measuring approx. 3 cm x 2.5 cm. - There are wear to the feet and the lower sections of the chairs as expected. - There are some light splits to the lacquer surface in places as expected. - One chair is approx. 0.5 cm higher than the other.
