Lot Essay

The present lot can be compared with the blue and white jar with cherub masks, grapes and floral decoration sold at Christie's London, 11 July 2006, lot 174. A closely-related blue and white jar dated to circa 1610-1630 in the British Museum, London, is illustrated by J.Harrison-Hall in Ming Ceramics, London, 2001, p.376, cat no.12:61. Harrison-Hall writes that it made have been made on order for the Portuguese Jesuits.
