Lot Essay

The jardiniere has an apocryphal six-character Yongzheng sealmark in underglaze blue to the base. In terms of the design, glaze, size and form, it bears close comparison to the imperial clair de lune jardiniere, Yongzheng mark and period (1723-1735), in the Baur Collection, Geneva, illustrated in The Baur Collection, Chinese Ceramics, Volume Three, Monochrome-Glazed PorceLain of the Ch'ing Dynasty, John Ayers, London, 1972, no. A 329.
The slip decoration to each of the four sides is painterly in its execution with the raised outlines of the pale white slip subtly contrasting with the soft pale blue hues of the glaze. Like the design on the Baur collection jardiniere, the present lot is decorated with various plants and flowering stems growing by rocks including bamboo, prunus blossom, and orchids. The design on this jardiniere would appear to be the mirror image of the Baur Collection example. It is interesting to note that both vessels have eight tiny spur marks to the underside of the base.
This jardiniere may also be compared to a pair of clair de lune pomegranate-form vases, Daoguang period (1821-1850), decorated in white slip with a flowering branch sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 May 2019, lot 3144.
