Lot Essay

The base of the dish bears an apocryphal six-character mark in underglaze blue for the Chenghua period of the Ming dynasty. Many pieces of Kangxi period blue and white porcelain bear apocryphal Chenghua marks out of an admiration for this earlier period that is still celebrated as a great era of Chinese ceramic production.
