Lot Essay

These dishes are interesting in that the decoration is incomplete. The pencil-style underglaze blue design would have been later infilled with overglaze doucai enamels and then fired a second time at a lower temperature. A pair of blue and white medalion bowls that would also have been further decorated with doucai enamels sold at Christie's New York, 17-18 March 2016, lot 1611.
