Lot Essay
These uncut panels would have later been made up in to dragon robes to be worn on formal court occassions. The Huangchao liqi tushi or 'Illustrated precedents for the ritual paraphernalia of the (Qing) imperial court', classified all clothing and accessories used by the court, from the emperor to the lowest functionary. The colour yellow was reserved for robes worn by members of the Imperial family whilst brown was reserved for the use of an Imperial Duke.

The yellow uncut dragon robe: - one half of one side of the robe is missing and the uncut robe is also missing the sleeve sections. - there are frayed edges to the textile and loose threads. - there is a red seal and a four-character inscription in black ink relating to the manufacture of the robe.
The brown uncut robe: - this is missing a section at each end as it does not have its original end selvedges.
