The set comprises: a circular box and cover cast on the top with an Arabic inscription encircled by a floral border; a small bottle vase cast on either side with shaped panels enclosing Arabic inscriptions beneath a key-fret border beneath the neck; and a group of implements which are similarly cast.
The vase 5⅜ in. (14.3 cm.) high

Incense burning was used for religious purposes as well as for the practical purpose of fumigating clothes. The burning of incense was also thought to enhance the clarity of mind and from the Song dynasty onwards became an important element in the scholar’s studio.
