Lot Essay

Zhangzhou ware, also referred to as Swatow ware, was made at kilns in south China near the port of Shantou (called Swatow by the Dutch). It was a coarse, utilitarian ware often decorated with birds and flowers. A comparable dish from the Franks collection is illustrated by Jessica Harrison-Hall in Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, no.11:164, p. 338.
