The ewer, of rounded ovoid form, has a short diagonal spout, a pair of loop handles, and a double-strap handle rising to just below the everted rim, and is covered inside and out with a glaze of black color decorated with phosphatic splashes of milky pale blue and buff tone.

A black-glazed ewer of Tang dynasty date and similar form, also with loop handles, is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, and illustrated in Pekin Kokyo Hakubutsuin ten, Tokyo, 1982, p. 74, no. 43. A brown-glazed, slightly smaller, Tang dynasty ewer of similar form was sold at Christie's New York, 29 March 2006, lot 393.
