A BRONZE ARCHAISTIC RITUAL FOOD VESSEL AND COVER, XU
DATED TO THE THIRD MONTH OF GENGCHEN YEAR OF THE ZHENGDE REIGN (1506-1521), 1520
Of square section, this bronze xu, supported by a slightly splayed raised foot, has two looped handles sprouting from a beast's mouth and geometric patterns casted on its body and cover. The cover has a finial and four flanges along with two lines of inscription: Zhengde gengchen chun sanyue zhiji ('By the auspices during the spring in the third month of Gengchen year of the Zhengde reign') and Yanpingfu zhifu Ouyang Duo zhi ('Commissioned by Ouyang Duo Prefect of Yanping Prefecture').
