A BRONZE ARCHAISTIC RITUAL VASE, GU
17TH CENTURY
The heavily casted gu vase with a rich brown patina is decorated with two bands of stylised mythological animal masks on the body and the foot, each part flanked by a pair of flanges, on a leiwen ground. The flaring neck shows an inscription evoking virtues and the traditions of the Shang dynasty, and the foot rim with the weight of the vessel, zhong wu jin liu liang ('weighs five catties and six taels').
