The well-potted bowl is decorated to the exterior with three butterflies in flight amongst melons growing from leafy vines. The base has an apocryphal six-character Qianlong seal mark in iron-red.

The lots were acquired in Beijing in the 1950s, when the collector served as an official at a Nordic Embassy. Following the trend of many Western diplomats stationed in Beijing at the time, he started to collect Chinese works of art to furnish his family home. The pieces were acquired from local dealers and shops and special attention was paid to beauty and elegance, which are a true testament to the collector’s discerning eye and taste.
