Ewers of this shape with panels of the same teardrop form appear to have been popular during the Ming dynasty and were made in various materials, especially during the 16th century. An example in silver in the collection of Dr. Carl Kempe and another in cloisonné enamel from the collection of Sir Harry and Lady Garner were included in the O.C.S. exhibition, The Arts of the Ming Dynasty, London, 1957, pl. 76, no. 282 and pl. 86, no. 313. Porcelain examples, one with Kinrande decoration, the other with blue-glazed body and blue, turquoise and yellow-glazed pierced dragon panels, dated to the 16th century, were included in the exhibition, Ceramic Masterpieces of the Orient from the Topkapi Palace, Turkey, Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo, 1990, nos. 32 and 33.
