Lot Essay

A brush rest would have formed part of the literati toolkit - it would have provided a place for the scholar to rest their brush while they contemplate their next brush stroke. These brush rests were most popularly fashioned from precious media, such as jade, porcelain, ivory, and bronze.

A brush rest of a similar form was sold at Christie's London, 8 November 2011, lot 85.
