The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Oil on canvas. Not lined. Varnished. Some slight frame abrasion, rubbing and a few associated pigments losses to the extreme edges. A few pinpoints of surface accretions in places. A few punctures, possibly artist's tack holes, to the four corners and along the edges. An additional small puncture off the centre left edge. Some very fine lines and networks of stable craquelure in places, most notably in the upper segment of the painting and at centre. Horizontal central stretcher bar mark visible. Two small pigment losses at centre in the animal's horn, and a few further in places. Small surface abrasion at centre lower edge. Examined under ultraviolet light: small pinpoints of retouching off the right lower edge, at centre right edge and some strokes at centre left lower edge; some strokes and small dots to the kneeling figure's arms and breasts and three horizontal strokes to her neck and face; small stroke in the animal's face, back and small dot to its behind and a stroke and small dots in front of its foreleg; small strokes to the aforementioned puncture off the centre left edge and one small dot to the right of the standing figure's head. The colours are strong and impasto is well preserved. Subject to the foregoing, it is our opinion that the work is in overall good condition.
