This vase is in the style of Aoki Mokubei (1767-1833). The Chinese poem is Deng Huanghe Lou [Ascending the Yellow Crane Tower], by Cui Hao (704-754) of the Tang Dynasty. The tower is situated in Wuchang by the Yangtze River. Legend has it that a Daoist once ascended to heaven on the back of a yellow crane, and a tower named after the bird was erected to commemorate the event. The poem, composed by Cui Hao on his visit to the tower, is one of the finest Tang poems surviving, and has made the tower a famous gathering point for generations of poets and writers.
