Lot Essay

The gigaku dance was a masked drama-dance performance imported into Japan in the Asuka period (AD538 to 710). This mask is in the form of the king of birds, Karura, a deified bird with a jewel grasped in its open beak, a topknot on its head, and layers of flesh hanging beneath its neck.
