Lot Essay

Hayashi Kodenji (1831-1915) first made cloisonné in 1861 under the tuition of Hayashi Shogoro, who had studied under the originator of revived Japanese cloisonné, Kaji Tsunekichi. In 1888 he established the Nagoya Shippo Kumiai, or Nagoya Cloisonné Gild, and in 1894 the Shippo Hoshu Gakko, or cloisonné Preservation School. He initiated the added luxury of the use of gold and silver wires in the place of the traditional brass or copper.
