AN IMPRESSIVE LARGE GILT WOOD PANEL
SIGNED HAYASE CHOHEI AND DATED BUNKA NI-NEN HACHI-GATSU (AUGUST, 1805), EDO PERIOD (EARLY 19TH CENTURY)
The thick wood panel pierced and carved dramatically in high relief and decorated with gilt lacquer, depicting two powerful dragons amongst tempestuous waves, the mouths carved to articulate the mantra syllables um and ah respectively, the reverse with some worn inscriptions and signature, later gilt frame

Lot Essay



Hayase Chohei was a sculptor of the Owari Domain, present-day Aichi Prefecture, and mainly worked on sculptures for temples and shrines. He was particularly known for dramatic carvings of dragons as in this present lot.
