Hayase Chohei was a sculptor of the Owari Domain, present-day Aichi Prefecture, and mainly worked on sculptures for temples and shrines. He was particularly known for dramatic carvings of dragons as in this present lot.

As can be seen in the photographs there is as to be expected some old wear overall consistent with age, including old chips and losses to extremities, and some associated repairs where pieces have been re-attached. there is some crackling and small losses to the gilt lacquer surface. The wood frame has old wear including small dents and chips.
