THE PIPECASE SIGNED HOKEI (MATSUKI HOKEI), EDO - MEIJI PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)
The pipecase carved in high and low relief through the thick layers of black lacquer with birds amongst various flowers of kikyo [Chinese bellflower], fuyo [rosemallow] and chrysanthemum beside a stream against a revealed red lacquer ground beneath with seigaiha [stylised wave design]; the Dutch leather pouch embossed with flowers and foliated scrolls, applied with a gilt copper clasp with toys, the back plate in gilt, shibuichi, shakudo and copper, with a tsuishu [curved red lacquer] ojime with a crane and peony, signed Teizan
21.7 cm. long (pipecase), 12.1 cm. wide (pouch)
