A LACQUER CHABAKO [TEA CEREMONY UTENSILS BOX]
EDO PERIOD (18TH CENTURY)
The rectangular box with flush-fitting lid, the exterior with black lacquer ground decorated in nashiji [sprinkled gold lacquer], kinji [gold lacquer], gold and silver takamaki-e [high relief lacquer], kirikane [cut out pieces of gold leaf], gyobu-hirame and hirame [cut gold leaf] with silver inlaid needles and a brush fence, with four kidney-shaped panels depicting landscapes, one with a brush-fence, blossoming camellia, two birds perched on a nearby rock and five others in flight, another with an ox, herdsman and pine tree, the third with a temple, and the fourth with a pine tree on a mountain above a group of pavilions, the interior nashiji, fundame [dull gold lacquer ground] rims
10.8 x 15.9 x 9.5 cm.
