The box and cover lavishly decorated overall using numerous lacquer techniques including gold and silver hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane, and nashiji, and inlays of gold foil and uchikomi (hollows in trees and rocks, filled with gold), with a bridge reaching over a river, surrounded by rocks and flowering cherry trees, the sides with mandarin ducks on a river lined with jakugo (stone-filled baskets which prevent river erosion), silver rims, the interior in dense nashiji
