A LACQUER SAGE-JUBAKO [PICNIC SET]
EDO PERIOD (17TH CENTURY)
The rectangular frame containing a four-tiered jubako [food container], two pewter tokkuri [sake bottles] in a box-stand, a rectangular tray and box and cover, the black lacquer ground decorated in gold hiramaki-e, harigaki, tsukegaki and nashiji with maple, plum and grasses on the banks of a stream, a nightingale singing in a branch of a plum tree on the jubako, the fitted black-lacquered wood box with inscription Ayacho Kobayashi-ya Kyubei [Kyubei of Kobayashi-ya in Ayacho], and dated Kanei hachi-nen, hachi-gatsu kichijitsu [an auspicious day in August, 1631]
