EDO PERIOD (LATE 18TH CENTURY)
Of rectangular form with overhanging cover, decorated in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-eand kirikane with two mon [crests] of manu ni agehacho [encircled swallowtail butterfly] and maru ni manji [encircled swastika] amongst young pine, bamboo and plum issuing from an undulating landscape with details of dandelions and grasses against a dense nashiji ground, each side similarly decorated, the interior of the cover depicting six minogame, pine and bamboo beside a stream before a waterfall, the interior of the box fitted with detachable inner trays decorated with pine and bamboo, an inkstone and silver water dropper in the form of a chrysanthemum flowerhead, fundame rims
24.5 cm. long
