SIGNED MAKUZU (MAKUZU KOZAN II, 1859-1940)
The oviform vase with short neck covered in a celadon glaze and decorated with two pairs of stylised doves, bands of half-roundels with stylised flowerheads to the shoulder and above the foot, the signature in underglaze blue to the base, the tomobako [original wood box] inscribed Kabin [vase], Seiji-yu, kodai hato-no-monyo [celadon, with an ancient dove design], signed Makuzu Kozan saku and sealed Makuzu Kozan

Miyagawa Hannosuke (Hanzan) was the adopted son of Miyagawa Kozan (1842-1916), otherwise known as Makuzu Kozan. Hanzan played an active part in the Makuzu workshop from a very early stage. After Kozan's death Hanzan took charge of the studio and in May 1917 officially became Makuzu Kozan II.
