Lot Essay

Miyagawa Hannosuke (Hanzan) was the adopted son of Miyagawa Kozan (1842-1916), otherwise known as Makuzu Kozan. Hanzan played an active part in the Makuzu workshop from a very early stage. After Kozan's death Hanzan took charge of the studio and in May 1917 officially became Makuzu Kozan II.

For the similar seal by Makuzu Kozan II, see Clare Pollard, Master of Meiji Japan: Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916) and his Workshop, (New York, 2002), p. 134-135. According to the author, this seal was used from 1916 to 1940.
