Lot Essay

The decoration of this boxis set against a fine basketwork surface. The Haritsu style specialised in the combination of unusual materials such as pottery, bone, lacquer, shell, bamboo and wood. This sophisticated taste and modern approach appealed to literati circles in the eighteenth century.

For the boxes in woven bamboo with inlays by Ogawa Haritsu, refer to this example and this example at the V&A, London.
