The tall vase slightly everted towards the angled shoulder and with short neck, the body with an incised stripe design against a mottled ground, signed Kazan to the base, the tomobako [original wood box] with inscription, dated March 1967, signed and sealed

Yokokura Kazan was born and worked in Yamagata Prefecture. He won various awards in Japan and abroad including the prize of the Minister for International Trade and Industry at the Art of Tea and Flower Vessel Exhibition (1958), a Grand Prix at the World Exposition in Brussels (1959), the Tokusen and Hokuto prizes at the Nitten Exhibition (1959) and the 6th Saito Mokichi Memorial Award (1960). His works were also exhibited at the Japan Modern Arts and Crafts Exhibition from 1961-1965 and five works of which were selected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to exhibit in the US, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand as well as at the International Art Festival in Berlin. A similar example was exhibited at the 4th Nitten Exhibition in 1961.
