Kazan lived and worked in Kyoto. He studied under Hijikata Torei and Ganku, then turned to Matsumura Goshun and the Shijo school.

This type of low, two-leaf folding screen is also referred to as Furosaki byobu which are used as partitions in a tea-ceremony room and also serve a decorative function with their delicately decorated panels.
