THREE METALWORK PANELS DEPICTING A CHINESE POEM
Two copper panels chiselled and inlaid in gold, silver, shakudo and shibuichi, one with Chinese mountain landscape with pavilions, the other with Chinese monks, the central shakudo panel chiselled and gilded with a Chinese poem, each panel sealed Masami or Yotsuya, mounted, framed and glazed

Lot Essay



The poem depicted here is by a renowned Song monk, Juefan Huihong (1071-1128), and collected in Da Zang Jing. It can be translated:

Seeing a distant village in autumn hills and woods
A few households scattered behind the clouds
After a wave of west wind and rain
I hear a few laughs from above


Yotsuya Masami was born in Okayama and graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1899 then furthered his studies abroad. He was a member of the Teiten Exhibition Committee and also various art-related committees. He exhibited at the Teiten and Shin-Bunten Exhibitions every year between 1927 and 1939 and was given a commendation for a hanging koro [incense burner] at the 14th Teiten Exhibition in 1933.
