Lot Essay

Red inventory number R.56.50 painted on reverse.

The inscription 'Oratio sole co(n)tra Toscana tuta' translates as Horatius alone against all Tuscany. For other pieces attributed to this workshop, see Johanna Lessmann, Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig, Italienische Majolika, Katalog der Sammlung, Brunswick, 1979, pp. 116-127. The writing on the reverse of the present lot appears to be very similar to that on the bowl illustrated on p. 117, no. 50.
