Lot Essay
Kevin's journey into photography began in his teenage years with inspiration coming from a second-hand 1970’s Russian built Zenit E SLR gifted by his uncle on his 18th birthday. He used that camera for a couple of years until the shutter curtain failed, resulting in the search for a replacement. A new Minolta 7000 was duly purchased and with advanced features and superior optics to hand, he started receiving commissions for weddings and portraits. Keen to broaden his skillset, he moved on to slide film and started processing images at home using a dark bag and an E6 processing kit. Transparencies remained the preferred medium until his first digital camera (a Fuji Finepix 602) in 2004. This capable “prosumer” platform became his main camera for a couple of years but it wasn’t quite good enough for commissioned work relying on the Minolta film camera until upgrading to Nikon DSLR’s. Although active in the commercial marketplace for corporate headshots and interiors, his primary interests in motorsport and aviation have remained. More recently, he's been working with local bands capturing live music performances and is in the process of building a portfolio of travel images made up of work in the UK, Europe and the USA. Travel and landscape photography has caused him to become obsessed with how light changes a scene and has been known to return to a location at different times to re-shoot a view, "much to the annoyance of any travelling companion!" While most successful photographers become specialists in a chosen field, he sees the world as a blank canvas and although wings and wheels are central themes to his work, he is constantly on the lookout for new subjects and challenges. The journey has only just begun.
