Lot Essay

Takiyasha was the daughter of a 10th century provincial warlord who rebelled against the Kyoto court. Here she is depicted in the ruined palace of her father (on the left sheet), invoking monsters to frighten Mitsukuni, a representative sent from the Kyoto court. Mitsukuni (on the right sheet) bravely faces the fearful spectre and ultimately defeats Takiyasha's spells.
