Lot Essay

Inoue Yasuji initially studied under the ukiyo-e master artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892). However in around 1879 he changed and became a student of the artist Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915). First he produced Western-style landscapes in his master's style, but by 1884 he returned to his ukiyo-e training, producing triptychs on heroic themes, then also other figurative prints. Yasuji died in 1889 aged only twenty-five years old.
