Lot Essay

This print depicts the actor Nakamura Utaemon III performing in the play Ichinotani Futaba Gunki, at the Kado Theatre, Osaka, in the 3rd month 1825. This design is from a set of five prints, each with Shikan depicted within a fan, issued for the “farewell performance” of the actor (who in fact continued acting under another name).
