The bell form base of this stupa rises from lotus bands and supports the stepped harnika and tapering parasol that is topped by a canopy and lotus bud finial. This distinctive type of stupa is characteristic of the Kadampa Buddhist sect and is associated with the great religious leader, Atisha, who disseminated Buddhism throughout the Himalayas in the 11th century. This form is said to be based on a stupa he carried, and it remains consistent through the 15th century.
