Lot Essay

This crisply carved bust represents the god Vishnu, evidenced by the tall miter and the lotus nimbus framing his head. His face is gently modeled with outlined lips, almond-shaped eyes, and arched brows. His tall crown has a foliate motif worked in relief, while heavy pendant earrings hang from his elongated lobes and pearled necklaces draping his chest. Compare the present lot to a 11th century buff sandstone head of Vishnu Vaikuntha, with a similarly treated solid lotus nimbus and modeled face and crown, sold at Christie’s 15 March 2017, lot 238.
