Lot Essay

Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, sits on a lotus base at the center of the present painting, his hands in the teaching gesture and the stems of lotus blossoms that support his iconic accoutrement, the sword and book. To his left and right sit his two principle students, Gyaltsab and Khedrup and lineage figures sit on blue cushions amid the clouds above. At top center, Shakyamuni Buddha sits holding an alms bowl, and a group of deities, including Vajrabhairava, White Mahakala, Shadbhuja Mahakala, Yama Dharmaraja and Vaishravana, are depicted in the foreground.
