Wang Naizhuang, a native of Hangzhou, was born into a family steeped in scholarship. His paternal grandfather was Wang Fu’an, one of the founders of the famed Xiling Seal Art Society in Hangzhou, an important engraving and epigraphy association. He became interested in painting as a child, and has since studied Western painting at Shanghai Art Academy. He has also studied under modern masters such as Xu Beihong and Wu Zuoren while enrolled in the Central Academy of Art. During the 1960s, Wang Naizhuang also studied ink painting with Li Kuchan.
