The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.
The painting is on its original canvas. Examined from the reverse, four canvas inserts corresponding to earlier restorations can be noted, along with a strip of adhesive tape intended to reinforce a more recent tear. The canvas is held under appropriate tension on its original stretcher.
To the naked eye, the painting displays fine details within the boat and the landscape. A T-shaped tear can be observed in the lower left corner, corresponding to the adhesive tape mentioned above on the reverse. A smaller tear is visible in the upper central area of the composition. The surface appears dirty overall and exhibits a network of craquelure throughout. Discoloured restorations are visible across the composition, particularly in the sky.
Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the observations above and reveals additional retouching in the sky, as well as in the sea and the left part of the boat. Some correspond to the craquelure network, others to past damages, the most significant located above the boat’s right-hand mast.
