The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.
The painting is executed on its original canvas, which is held under appropriate tension on its original stretcher. Examined from the reverse, two canvas inserts corresponding to restorations can be observed along the upper edge—one at the centre and the other in the upper left corner. The overall condition is stable.
To the naked eye, the painting retains attractive effects in the red highlights. A loss is visible in the cloud on the right side of the composition. A network of craquelure is present across the entire surface, with associated retouching. More significant restorations can also be observed in the upper right and lower left quadrants. The surface is dirty.
Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned observations and reveals additional retouching and restorations in the sea and the sky. The boat appears to be better preserved.
