The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.
The painting is executed on its original canvas, which is held under appropriate tension on its original stretcher. The overall condition is stable.
To the naked eye, the painting has preserved attractive tones in the architectural elements. Two areas of restoration, now discoloured, can be observed along the left edge, corresponding to past damage. Additional discoloured retouching is visible in the sky. Signs of frame abrasion, sometimes accompanied by minor losses, are visible along the upper and lower edges. A small loss can be seen at the bottom of the painting, at the extreme left of the composition. The painting exhibits a network of craquelure across the entire surface. In the purplish tones, the craquelure appears contracted, with associated discoloured restorations.
Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the above observations and reveals further retouching associated with the craquelure network throughout the composition. Additional interventions are also visible in the sky, including more substantial restorations. Retouching can likewise be observed in the red areas of the central boat.
