The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.
The painting has been relined. The canvas is held under tension on a later keyed stretcher. The overall condition is stable.
To the naked eye, the painting has preserved attractive pinkish tones in the sky and in the rendering of the waves. The painting exhibits a network of craquelure across the entire composition, particularly visible in the cream and darker tones. In the darker areas, these correspond to premature craquelure. Discoloured restorations are visible in the sky. Marks of the former stretcher are visible along the left, right, and upper edges in the sky.
Examination under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned observations and reveals an additional restored area along the lower left edge, extending across the full width of the composition, as well as scattered retouching in the sky and the sea. More significant restorations are also visible in the sky and the sails; these are sometimes associated with the aforementioned craquelure network, as well as with past damages.
