Maharana Bhim Singh (r. 1778-1828) was the 26th Maharana of the Kingdom of Mewar and the first Maharana of the Princely State of Udaipur, after signing a treaty with the British Empire to accept their protection from the Mughal Empire. He was remembered as a weak leader after taking rule at he young age of sixteen, and succumbing to a foreign power. However, several important court artists worked under his employ, including the Rajput masters Bagta (active c. 1761–1814) and and his son Chokha (active 1799–c. 1826). Compare the present processional portrait to a similar work at the Art Institute of Chicago (acc. no.1975.507) attributed to Ghasi and another signed by Chokha in the collection of the San Diego Museum of Art (Edwin Binney 3rd Collection, 1990.640).
