Lot Essay

This particularly large portrait is of almost identical size to other equestrian portraits of the Maharana in the collection of Isabella and Vicky Ducrot and in the National Gallery of Victoria. It is probable that it was part of the same series (Four Centuries of Rajput Painting, Mewar, Marwar and Dhundhar, exhibition catalogue, Milano, 2009, cat.63, p.79 and Andrew Topsfield, Paintings from Rajasthan in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 1980, cat.236 and 238, p.152). Two of these paintings in Victoria are attributed to the painters Rama and Nathu.
