Lot Essay

Dressed in contemporary Rajput attire, Rama and Sita share an elaborate bejeweled throne beneath a golden canopy. Rama is crowned and nimbate, emphasizing his dual royal and divine status at the conclusion of the Ramayana epic. The couple is receiving anointments from a priest, while behind them are Rama’s three bother Bharata, fanning the couple with a fly whisk, Lakshmana and Satrughna. Raja Vibhisana, Ravana’s brother who aided in Lakshmana’s victory, is depicted venerating the couple from the lower right corner. A troop of monkeys, lead by Hanuman and Sugriva, as well as the bear leader Jamnavat extend their praise from the lower left corner.
The composition of the present painting is similar to an early 19th century Mandi school painting in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (acc. no. IS.13-1949)
